Default Novice question

Aged neighbour has an aged Nokia...never used it..can't find any paperwork
etc....a present some years ago. Doesn't know what Tariff if any it is/was
on...doesn't know if its locked etc.
Just had a look inside - it has an o2 sim card in.

Recharged it today and it seems like its in working order..except shows the
message SIM card registration failed.

Replaced the o2 sim card temporarily with the Tesco sim card from my wife's
mobile...all works fine...so does that mean the phone isn't locked?

She wants it setting up so she can use it in an emergency...so it'll be very
low calls in and out.

Any advice appreciated:-

How does she register the o2 sim card?
What tariff would be best for her...a pay as you go one I expect?
Should she go for an o2 pay as you go one?
Or should she go for another..get another sim - say Tesco or similar and use
with pay as you go?

Thank you.

o2 disconnect PAYG SIM's after 6 months of non usage, you have to make
at least one chargable call every 6 months to prevent this IIRC

Tesco use the o2 network, so Tesco SIM's work in locked o2 PAYG
handsets, but not the other way around.

She can't. it's dead.

Depends on her calling patten, if she wants flat rate charging to
other mobiles and standard landines regardless of network then Tesco
is the better choice over o2 PAYG.

Sam.

Thanks for that.

Can you just expand on...

Borrow a SIM off of a mate that's on any network *other* than Tesco or O2,
stick it in the phone and see if it works.

Try a different sim card in it.
