I understand (more-or-less) that if I buy a new phone on a new network I
can transfer the number on my old phone by obtaining a PAC code from the
old network. Is there a time limit during which this process has to be
performed? In other words, how new does the new phone have to be? Can
I use this mechanism to transfer a number to a phone I've used for
several months?

Yep. You can port a number to an existing phone, even if you have used this
phone for a while. What you will find is that the phone number you have been
using for a few months will be disconnected.

Depends upon the network though, Vodafone can only port at the time a
contract is taken out, some O2 service providers have the same rule. Orange,
3 and T-Mobile allow it at anytime I believe.

It depends on your new network. SOme will let you, others have to have
the porting set up at the point you buy your new phone and cannot do it
retrospectively.

That is not correct for all networks in the UK.

Hi,
You can port a number from another network to Vodafone at any time.
If you are coming to us fresh then you need to give us the PAC at the
first point of contact when we set up your new account. If you're
already a customer of ours and want to bring another number in to us
using a PAC you can add this to your account too. You could then
have more than 1 number on your account.
If you wanted to cancel the old number and keep the new ported number
you can always cancel the old number by writing and giving 30 days
notice. Note though that if your old number is still committed to us
under the contract, you'd be charged the line rental as a lump sum on
your final bill for the period between the day your number cancels and
the end of your commitment date. Hope this helps.

I think sifting through the rubbish that this is basically what I said, you
can only port at the time you take out the contract, otherwise all your
contacts would see the wrong number being displayed.
