Default Number porting possibilities

(Apologies if there is or has been a recent thread covering this, but I
didn't spot any...)

I have just reached the end of a 12-month cashback deal on O2 with
Mobileshop. I am wavering over the wisdom of another cashback deal as
the T&Cs seem to be getting more complicated and numerous and I keep
reading stories of other people getting into difficulties. Also, some
retailers are moving to 18-month deals which to me merely increases the
risk with no reward. (Having said all this, I have had no trouble with
Mobileshop throughout the contract.)

While I prevaricate endlessly over the options, I intend to get a PAC
and decamp temporarily to a PAYG network, most likely Tesco. Some
quick questions:

a) Any problems porting from O2 contract to Tesco (they are the same
network underneath) ?
a) Any problems porting from Tesco back to a contract deal, including
O2 ?
b) Any problems porting from Tesco back to a different PAYG deal ?

If I return to a new contract, I'll probably do it a month or so after
temporarily jumping ship.

I may decide to stay with O2 if they can come up with a reasonable deal
on a SE K800i (I've had my T610 for a few years now and fancy an
upgrade), or even with no phone at all, but would like to be sure I
don't leave and land in an awkward place.

TIA.

Hey, I was in a very similar position with o2.

Was calling for a pac number to go to virgin (300 mins and 300 txt with
a rubbish phone for £10 a month)

They offered me 500 mins and 400 txts, for £15 a month, and an equally
rubbish phone. Didnt like the phone so they offered the same but with
£100 credit in my o2 account instead of the phone.

So, £180, 12*£15, less £100 credit is £80 a year or about £6.50 a month
for 500 mins.

It certainly did the trick for me... no more mesing around with cashbacks.

Thanks for the info. I have found some relatively inexpensive deals
for a K800i with either T-mobile (cheap rental) or O2 themselves (extra
goodies), so I will do some calculations and come up with some numbers
and challenge the retentions department to at least match the cheapest.

I had none this way around.

Porting back to O2 they forgot to port my voicemail (Tesco use O2's
network). Callers to me were getting sent to the Tesco voicemail that I
could not access.
