O2 1471 Service Ended

O2 have ended the 1471 service for mobile customers. Most annoying!

What was your usage pattern that made 1471 more convenient than the
alternatives?

No good if the phone is turned off/unreachable, and the caller decides
not to leave a message.

I was bearing those possibilities in mind, surely the text alert *is*
sent when you next turn the phone on?

Vodafone have *#147# that performs that function as a GSM command, but I
think it's proprietary just for Vodafone ?
