I'm on an (shop) o2 contract (I think its called O2 100 or something like
that, as is gives 100 free mins/texts a month).
For the past few months, I've had a feeling their GPRS charges have been
rather high for my usage, so around last month, I reset the "call
counters" on my phone (which includes the data tranferred counters).
I then decides to make very minimal use of mobile internet. The result is
I've got 13 quids of internet usage, for what my phone claims is 800k in/
600k out of data. (Mobile itnernet here is o2 active, I've not (since I
reset the counters, used it for surfing with the laptop, for example).
So not much under 10 quid a megabyte?! (probably more, as I reset the
counters before the last charging period).
Is this even vaguely right? I've got a 3G phone, so it's probably using 3G
rather than GPRS most of the time (I get 3G coverage here), should
that make a difference.
Assuming it's not, who should I complain to to get it sorted out? I think
the same happened on the last bill, but I dont have anything to 'prove'
this .

Well, their advertised rate id 3 quid a megabyte, which is what I would
call "rip off britain", there's a difference between "rip off" prices and
actually charging more than the advertised prices.
2 quid for a coffee in a motorway services is a rip off, but then being
charged a tenner for it...

half price with you automatically, cos they haven't a friggin clue how to
charge for gprs.

They're going to recalculate my bill, we'll see. I feel it'll be a bit of
a struggle to get anything back out of them.
Main reason I left O2 was over their pricing of GPRS, they kept charging me
for GPRS usage during the bl00dy night when I was asleep (& no it wasn't a
fault with my phone) and one day charged me £80 for one days use, strangely
it was the day after the 3 months free gprs useage ended. Used to have to
call them every month to get re-embursed the monies.

Out of interest, who did you switch it? I've been with o2 for years now
(since Cellnet days) and i've never really had need to change, but this
might be it.

data in/out counters, so I could tell how much GPRS I'd used.

80 quid a day!? At 3 quid a meg, thats 26megs. Can GPRS actually do that
in a day?

Ended up changing to 3, pay £15 per month on a VTT1400 contract (300 talk
mins, 50 Video mins, 1000 text, 50 MMS and Free MSN Messenger) with a free
Nokia N73 chucked in.
I work away and since moving from O2 now have broadband connection at night
to check emails so don't ready have the need to use phone for gprs which was
my main reason for using it. But 3 will transfer your isp email for £2.50pm
for 10MB and have full internet access for £5pm for 30MB. You also get 3mail
which is free to receive to the phone, but they charge a fortune to send.
If I know ones sending me stuff I really need to look at right away I just
ask them to CC a copy to my 3mail account and I can check it right away. N73
can read word, excel, pdf.
The 26MB was with a Nokia 6230, how they said I could have done that much I
don't know. Got fully refunded for it though after complaining and asking
for a detailed printout of my usage.

Clearly, that would appear to be the case, I still can't work out why in
each billing period, I have periods where my GPRS usage is listed as
included within my tariff, then there will be a day or two when it's
charged, then I'll get a patch of inclusive downloads, then I'll be charged
for a few, then I'll get some included, and so on...
o2 and GPRS charges
