"O2 have effectively stopped issuing 2G SIMS now as 3G SIMS are
backwards compatible."

Not unless you are outside a 3G area when it will drop to 900MHz "2G".

If the phone is a dual band 900/1800 MHz 2G phone would it ever think
it was inside a 3G area? I suspect that phone would just ignore the
3G junk in the SIM and behave the same way it would with a 2G SIM.

very true...I wouldn't touch a 2100Mhz phone :~)

I was just worried the o2 3g sim would only use the 1800Mhz side of the
'phone...
