That is the theortical maximum the technology and device can offer you
but juts like fixed-line broadband it is a contended service (i.e.
shared).

There are 101 factors which influence speed, the main one being traffic
on the network (voice takes priority).

The maximum speed may well be 1.8Mb/sec but when you factor in the
microcell you're speaking to having only a 16Mb/sec connection or less
to the network infrastructure which has to carry your data, the data
for everyone else as well as all phone calls and text messages, as
well as the bandwidth being shared with other networks which might
share that same pipe then that's quite a busy cell, isn't it?

The link you get to the base station is only part of the issue. The
data has to get there before it gets to you, and 3 see very bad at
that. The speeds you quote are what I got with 3, and are why I dumped
them.

PMFBI, but I have a N95 (8gb) on Voda. How are you connecting to the
lappy? It's not something I need much of, but I might as well try it
and see.

With the USB lead using Nokia PC suite and internet
option...interesting to try but I don't 'need' it....never got the N95
for this anyway

If you're using One Touch the application that Nokia supply you will see
the connection speed reported by Windows as being that of your COM
device settings (defaults to 460kb/s with the Nokia software
configurator). You can go into these settings in the control panel, find
your Nokia Modem device and change this setting up to the maximum baud
rate of 920k and this speed will be reported instead; however, this is
not your actual connection speed. Try using http://www.speedtest.net/ to
get more meaningful information. If you're running version 20 or greater
of the firmware you should see the 3.5G logo appear during data
transfers, if you are and you don't then you need to phone up and
upgrade to Web n Walk PLUS. Standard Web n Walk will not allow HSDPA.

3.6Mb/s is theoretical on T-Mobile however most people will struggle to
just make 3.4Mb/s with a strong 3G signal.

Got ver 20, where are you meant to change the rate to 920k though ?

Go to Control Panel then Network Connections then look in the Dial-up
section and you should see Nokia N95 USB Modem (OTA). Right click it
and select Properties. Then select Configure and you will be able to
change the maximum speed from 460800 to 921600. This assumes Windows XP.

No it was already maximum, using vista here but anyway a speed test
showed I'm on a 1.4Mb/s connection...
