Am in the middle of an 18month contract with Orange - Went and upgraded my
phone via ebay (was getting annoyed with my SPV M500's lack of memory) and
bought myself a a shiney new M3100.
Now according to those wonderful people at Orange CS, I'm not allowed to
'upgrade' my old simcard to a 3G USIM as I didn't get my new phone from them
specifically - the only way to do it is to buy a 3G capable phone from
Orange. Has anyone managed to get a 3G sim from Orange without upgrading the
phone through them aswell?

I've never understood that Orange refuse to enable 3G on accounts which
obtained their 3G handsets elsewhere.
I'm with T-Mobile and my SIM is 3G enabled, even though it's a 2.5G
device. All I need to do it put it in a 3G device to use the 3G services.
What's even more bizarre, is that if you did upgrade to a 3G device via
Orange, but then later upgrade to a 2G device, the 3G service gets
turned back off again! So, no upgrade to 2G device, sell that on ebay
and still use the original 3G one....

Equally odd is that you can apparently get a PAYG 3G Orange SIM easily
enough.

I too will be in a similar position when I upgrade my SPV M500 (I
tried the M600 and M3100, but both were too slow, so I'm after an
imate ultimate 9150 or xda atom life, neither of which will be offered
by Orange).
Question for Jon or other Orange person: say I lost my Orange 2g sim,
would Orange then send me out a 3g sim as a replacement?
Or would I have to wait until Orange have finally run out of stocks of
2g sims?
AFAIK the other mobile companies all now use usims (3g sims) as
standard, whether or not the phone is 2g or 3g.

If they're anything like vodafone, all vodafone sims are 3G,
however, if you're phone is only 2.5g or 2g the sim cards
are backwards compatible. If someone has a phone capable
of 3G services, it's just a case of adding something to the
network profile, obviously orange are being obnoxious and
refusing to enable these services

No, you would get a SIM suitable for the device registered to your
account, I.e. another 2G one.

True, but I believe there's some restriction about porting numbers to
them (to avoid ex-contract people downgrading to PAYG to get 3G). Also,
if you wanted to convert it to a contract, there were some
restrictions/limitations (eg. if you don't go with a 3G device, 3G
support gets turned off etc).
It's all a bit vague, but certainly bizarre behaviour which makes me
unlikely to return to Orange in the near future.

And the device registered to your account is actually the last handset
the Orange supplied you with, and cannot be possibly updated if you
sourced a handset elsewhere?

Call retentions and say you will go to Vodafone or O2 on a SIM only
deal. In fact I think everyone else gives you a 3G enabled SIM card
automatically.
