Ok, my day role is in Network Management so I have a little experience in
this BUT I make no claim to be an expert as I only get to dabble in this
particular area on the odd occasion...
GSM sites need the TRX hardware to support EDGE, and the software on the
site itself to support it. That, plus the signalling capacity back to the
BSC. I'm of the understanding that some BTS types (I'm veering into the
realms of different Nokia BTS types here) such as Ultrasites are better at
handling EDGE than older types such as, say 2nd Gen though.
There's certainly no clash with 3G as you mention - there are sites out
there that have 2G EDGE, 2G EDGE with 3G, 2G with 3G and 2G by themselves.
In other words, any combination is possible, it's down to how that site has
been configured/planned.
Feel free to mail me privately if you'd like further specifics (or on-group
for general stuff)
Regards
Jon.
