Any using this service? How widespread is the availability in UK?

My wife's Nokia 6111 is EDGE-enabled and shows an E occasionally while on
WAP, so there's one person using it.

Availability of EDGE-enabled BTS sites is fairly thin, generally (although
not always) in areas outside 3G coverage for now.

Jon.

I have seen the E appear now and again but I really use GPRS as it is, its 90%
of the time G and 10% of the time E (so I am not convinced its really connected
to Edge of the phone is just getting confused - SPV C600).

In the East Riding of Yorkshire, nr Hull.

Cheers,

Mike

I've heard that comment before. My wife's Nokia 6111 doesn't seem much (any)
quicker when on EDGE than on GPRS, and a friend in the Glasgow area has
reported the same on a Sony Ericsson device.

Mind, my only experience with EDGE is for WAP. My internet GPRS use is on my
6310i.

Jon.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth
switching to Orange from o2 for the EDGE access - But I guess it isn't -
What would you say?

Thanks :-)

Is EDGE something that comes as standard with a modern basestation? In
other words, if Orange have new enough basestation hardware will it support
it by default? Or is there some clash with 3G such that it only gets
deployed in non-3G areas? (I'm assuming any site with 3G already has enough
backhaul bandwidth)

I realise that Orange probably won't pay for extra hardware except in the
areas they decide they want it, but is it something that's likely to get
more common as basestations are added/replaced or will they only do the work
to switch it on in areas that can't get 3G?

Theo

Ok, my day role is in Network Management so I have a little experience in
this BUT I make no claim to be an expert as I only get to dabble in this
particular area on the odd occasion...

GSM sites need the TRX hardware to support EDGE, and the software on the
site itself to support it. That, plus the signalling capacity back to the
BSC. I'm of the understanding that some BTS types (I'm veering into the
realms of different Nokia BTS types here) such as Ultrasites are better at
handling EDGE than older types such as, say 2nd Gen though.

There's certainly no clash with 3G as you mention - there are sites out
there that have 2G EDGE, 2G EDGE with 3G, 2G with 3G and 2G by themselves.
In other words, any combination is possible, it's down to how that site has
been configured/planned.

Feel free to mail me privately if you'd like further specifics (or on-group
for general stuff)

Regards

Jon.
