Default Orange international: 20p to 45p to 20p

Am on Orange's Everyday 50. Maybe 10 years ago I could call mobiles in
Italy for 20p a minute.

Today I got an offer from Orange saying that instead of 45p, I could pay
an extra monthly charge and the rate would be 20p.

But when did the rate to Italian mobiles go from 20p to 45p?

The cost of making international calls has gone substantially down in
the same period.

Am surprised you think the price of telecoms should rise after 10 years
of development, growth, increased capacity, etc.

In this sense telecoms is like computing: better, cheaper, faster.

For example, some calling cards now charge as little as 0p a minute to
landlines (plus 5p connection). Skype has made mincemeat out of the
idea of paying extra for international calls.

But cartels, strange crosscharging and accounting assumptions is fixing
the pricing of mobile calls at an artificially high level.

So why (and when) has the cost of calling a mobile in Italy from Orange
ED50 gone fom 20p to 45p?

Not long before they decided to have an offer where the calls become the
same rate as they were before, more than likely.
