Default orange and locking?

new to the group, a quick scan reveals that orange tend to lock their
phones - and indeed 'customise' them.
my motorola razr in black from roughly 11 months ago works with whatever sim
i try.

did i get lucky or is it only certain models that fall victim?

Where did you get the phone from? CPW, Orange.co.uk online shop?

You probably bought it from carphone warehouse, who are allowed to use
un-branded stock in certain circumstances.
