Default Are Orange lying to me about a network fault?

Hi, I'm on hold to Orange at the moment. Don't worry, I have a cup of tea
and a film to watch.

My problem started about 2 weeks ago: As often as twice a day, but not
everyday, mostly when I get up in the morning, the phone was showing "Sim
Registration Failed" and I needed a restart to make/receive calls. It's an
N80 on Orange with Orange firmware. Originally I suspected a sim card fault
so I called them, their system told them it was my handset. They sent me a
new handset the next day. The problem remained. I called again yesterday
morning and the CSR told me that there had been an email about this issue
going round and that it was a network fault. He then had a short rant about
people not reading emails. Said they'd only noticed the fault because of the
high volume of replacement handsets being sent out. He had no idea how long
it would take to fix and his manner was enraging me and so had to hang up on
him. I don't really believe him as I live with someone on Orange who is
unaffected.

Has anyone any ideas? Network fault? Sim card?

I'm glad to hear it!! I'd hate to think what would happen if you had to
re-boot your partner every morning because their registration had failed
;o)

If only there was a customer services for the problems I have with her!

An hour and a quarter on hold now... surely the end is near.

If she reads the above, almost certainly..! You haven't left any sharp
knives lying around, have you..?

As a guess it will be a HLR problem (home location register).

I have similar on a older nokia (non symbian or 3g).

It may take a few days but will get sorted soon.

It could easily be a network fault, with a piece of kit called the HLR.
If an HLR plays up it will affect subscribers in a non-geographical
manner, I.e. up and down the country. There are about 40 HLRs in service
so the chances of you being on the same HLR as your housemate are 1 in
40 I.e. very small so they would remain unaffected by this HLR issue.

I'm not saying that's whats happening in your case but it is a
possibility.

The fact is that the N80 is a shockingly poor handset for the price it
commands, and re-starting the phone every day is a good idea anyway.

Why did you feel the need to reply?

I'm posting here because I don't trust Orange's answers. I hung up after
waiting 2 hours to speak to someone, so I have little choice.

Thanks Jon. The main reason I didn't believe them was that the first time i
called they immediately said it was the handset.

If it is a problem for about 1 in 40 people I'm surprised it hasn't been
fixed after nearly 3 weeks. If I'm up late/early enough I'll call them and
find out for sure.

I agree with your comments about the N80. It's a rubbish phone. The worst
thing being that Orange will not release the new firmware needed for TomTom
to work (amongst other fixes). After much hassle I upgraded to the newer
version myself. I could use TomTom but a new problem came about - the
voicemail indicator getting stuck on. I had to put the sim in another phone
to get rid. I'm thinking of trying to persuade Orange to give me an N73
instead - I hardly ever use the wifi so what's the point.
