Default Orange PAYG Standard vs PAYG SpeakEasy (more expensive)

I called Orange today to query about pricing and tariffs.

I was on PAYG standard rate (a long standing PAYG account of ten years). I
was told that this tariff was now the most expensive and they recommended
that I move to the new SpeakEasy with Bonus TopUp tariff. I have two phones
here, so decided to change just one of them to the new SpeakEasy tariff.

Having changed to the new SpeakEasy tariff on just one of my phones I
thought it was time to do a few timed test calls just to see how much I was
saving on the new SpeakEasy tariff, compared to the old one.

It seems the new SpeakEasy tariff is more expensive than my old existing
one. A 2 minute call to a fixed landline cost me 30p on SpeakEasy, but only
20p on the old standard PAYG tariff.

It seems I have been shafted again by Orange. It also seems that I cannot
go back to the old tariff either.... (No suprise there then!)

So if you are considering changing your tariff from an old long standing
PAYG account to SpeakEasy, I wouldn't bother. It will cost you more to make
calls to fixed lines, according to my tests.

How can Orange claim that they were going to save me money, when it appears
they have done the opposite? Can I complain to anyone about this?

You've picked about the only call cost that did increase. I would do a
test call during peak time to another network and you'll see a big
difference. Did you tell Orange you mainly called landlines? Did you
not get the costs explained to you before you switched?

All they asked me was if I made more phone calls or send more text messages.
I don't send text very often so I picked phone calls. I only call fixed BT
lines as a rule. Hardly any mobiles.......... I assume I have chosen the
wrong tariff for my useage.....?? They said it would be cheaper for all the
calls I make. They were wrong????

I'm not sure which one you were on but it sounds like the old choose
your own off peak in the bottom table.

It's more expensive off-peak to landlines. It's 5p/min cheaper at peak times.
To other networks its 10p/min cheaper off-peak and 35p/min cheaper at
peak times.

If its only landlines you call, and mainly off-peak, then yeah - the
old tariff would suit you better. On the whole though the Speak Easy
tariff is a much cheaper tariff.

Chris

Give Orange Customer Relations team a call on 0800 0790272 and they
might be able to switch the tariff back to your old one. They did for
me because i lost my free evening calls promotion when i changed
tariff. Gave them a ring and they had all the tariffs/promotions on
their computer and just re-applied it for me.
