Default Orange Sim-only deals not 3G?

Spoke to Orange cs today, expressing interest in their various 'animal'
SIM-ONLY deals and PAYG SIM-ONLYdeals.

I have an unlocked 3G phone and naturally want to a 3G sim in it - but
(lucky I asked) cs confirmed that unless I bought a phone from Orange they
could only issue a 2G SIM. They can't provide a 3G SIM-ONLY connection!!

This seems a ridiculously 'dog in a manger' and uncompetitive attidude for
them to adopt.

Was the cs lady misinformed and would I get a better answer from an Orange
shop?

Also, shouldn't Orange make clear on their literature and on their website
(they certainly don't do this!) that sim-only packages are 2G only? They are
surely withholding important information by not doing so?

Finally, I was wondering if it might be possible to transfer the phone
number from on old, dormant, OVP Virgin SIM which I have to any new
account which I might possibly open with Orange - but was told by cs that
the transfer of any phone number 'Orange to Orange' was not possible!!
That's surely nonsensical!?

This all seems very peculiar and I'd appreciate any helpful/interesting
comments from readers of this group (not that I feel keen to deal with such
a totally unhelpful firm as Orange now I've had a taste of their current
attitudes)!!

Many thanks

Paul

No one has accused Orange of being competitive for years
FT Orange management are dogmatic in the extreme

Try emailing the exec office they might be able to help

Maybe, you might find a salesman who's learnt how to manipulate the system

Wouldn't be the first time

FT Orange shafted me a few years ago when i had been saving some
B&R 15 month prepay contract Sims only to be told they had passed
a use by date they hadn't told anyone, and refused to offer any
compensation!

OVP Virgin sims are like gold dust, I would hang on to it or sell it on
ebay.

What you want to do is called migrating and isn't allowed on any network
as it's a form of cheap back door upgrading.

You will have to port the number to another network and then port back
again,
free Virgin sims with free credit to call their CS are ideal for it.

But O2 / Tesco sims have the advantage of cheaper calls to it from
landlines.
Free Tesco sims have 20p of credit with them, which might be enough
to call Tesco CS to do the port?
O2 you normally have to top up first

There are rumours of FT Orange getting some new management,
with new ideas, as a former Orange list fan, god i do hope so

No she wasn't misinformed, this is indeed their policy.

These are PAYG and available for free in Orange shops when bought with
some credit.

The 3G PAYG SIM cannot be transferred to PAYM.

Thats just a tariff change, should be fairly easy.

From PAYM Sim only T's and C's

Clause 9
"If you wish to migrate from a PAYM Service Plan to a SIM Only Service Plan
you may do this at any time, but if you are still in contract you will need
to pay any outstanding line rental in relation to your PAYM Service Plan."

It would still be the "same" account/phone number, and you could use your 3G
handset but it would still be limited to GPRS speeds, and there is a "No
Modem Use" clause buried in the T's and C's as well.

You would be moving off "OVP VM", (unable to return), and if (unlikely as it
may be) your sim card is incompatible with your 3G handset, Orange would be
reluctant to replace a sim card linked with the "original" phone on your
account, and they might/would charge you for it as well.

Anyway
It seems to be a lot of hassle
You could try T Mobile or Three on PAYG, if it works for you, port an
O2/Tesco number.

If you buy a PAYG sim card on Three for £9.99 (£10 credit), you can port a
number in and get £10 back in credit :-)

Alan

Where did you get that information from? I'm a CSR at Orange and have seen
many new sim-only pay monthly plans issued with 3G sim cards recently. I
think it has been changed but not mentioned to anyone.

From experience. I had a sim-only contract about 2 months ago, that I ended
for this reason.

Why is it I'm not surprised Orange haven't told anyone of a policy change
