From PAYM Sim only T's and C's
Clause 9
"If you wish to migrate from a PAYM Service Plan to a SIM Only Service Plan
you may do this at any time, but if you are still in contract you will need
to pay any outstanding line rental in relation to your PAYM Service Plan."
It would still be the "same" account/phone number, and you could use your 3G
handset but it would still be limited to GPRS speeds, and there is a "No
Modem Use" clause buried in the T's and C's as well.
You would be moving off "OVP VM", (unable to return), and if (unlikely as it
may be) your sim card is incompatible with your 3G handset, Orange would be
reluctant to replace a sim card linked with the "original" phone on your
account, and they might/would charge you for it as well.
Anyway
It seems to be a lot of hassle
You could try T Mobile or Three on PAYG, if it works for you, port an
O2/Tesco number.
If you buy a PAYG sim card on Three for £9.99 (£10 credit), you can port a
number in and get £10 back in credit :-)
