Why can't we just stay on GMT and be done with it..? All this talk of it
getting dark earlier and kids coming home from school in the dark is
eyewash if you ask me.
The number of hours of daylight doesn't magically change when the clocks
are adjusted, all it means is that people sleep an extra hour of daylight
away in the mornings and then complain that it isn't light enough later
on.
Why can't people just get up an hour earlier and go to bed an hour
earlier, then nothing would change and we wouldn't have to fiddle with
countless clocks..! Start work at 8 instead of 9 in the winter months, is
that so hard to comprehend..?!
I work for a bus company and I have a huge number of clocks on our
on-board CCTV systems to adjust this weekend..! The newer digital systems
are self adjusting, but there are still 80+ VHS-based systems that I have
to adjust manually. It takes me almost a full day twice a year, I could do
without it..!

No, way. I'd rather have light evenings / nights in the summer, so would
rather have 2 hours added during the Summer that is be on CEST, have no
problem moving clocks forwards and backwards so will be happy to follow
many other European countries and addopt CET/CEST.

But the daylight is there..! You are in bed in the morning..! Get up and
start work earlier, then it will still be light when you finish..!

Ahh but think of all the problems if the rest of Europe doesn't sink up
with us. Or the USA still carries on with changing it's clocks. You'd
still have to wonder what the time was in Paris and what time to call
Fred in New York !!
We're now part of a global economy and reverting to GMT all year would
cause mayhem.

We only change the clocks to placate the Scots, where, if we didn't it
wouldn't get light till about 0900 up there. Remember they have their
own Parliament now. Scottish MP's can vote on matters English in
Westminster. English MP's can't vote on matters Scottish ! Great
democracy eh ?

Hmm. I have to start work at 21:00 can't start that earlier, those are
my hours.
I finish at 05:00 so am already awake.

No, you're not right.
I don't start work at 09:00 I start work at 21:00. I like the vast
majority of people have no way of being able to change their hours of
work.
Not hard to comprehend at all, but extremely hard to impliment when the
place you work for only opens at certain times and won't allow you to
change your hours.

You think that's bad, I have friends in Arizona, where they don't change

That's your personal mayhem, though.
For the majority of the rest of us, changing clocks is much easier than
having to change business hours.

No-one up here needs placating by a bunch of softie southerners. We
know when we are well off - we have far more daylight hours than London
during the summer, and we are at least 500 miles away from London for

Not another one...we change the clocks to give an extra hour in the evening *in the
summer*, that's why it's called "daylight saving time", or "British Summer Time".

Ivor, let's just consider the logistics of what you are proposing.
Every single worker in the UK that has a contract of employment would have
to have it changed. I believe the statutory notice period for changes to
employment contracts is 12 weeks. Add to this the *huge* HR undertaking of
getting every individual contract or addendum to contract produced and
distributed.
Every single computer system in the land that performed automated tasks
would have to be reprogrammed to fit in with the new hours.
The Stock Exchange and financial institutions would have to adhere to these
new hours..potentially putting them further out or sync with foreign
markets all over the world.
All opening hours or hours of business would have to be republished..for
just about every business in the land.
Essentially our whole way of life would have to change for 6 months of the
year.
Hmmm when compared to changing a few clocks...I know what I'd choose!

Personally, I think they should alter the working / school day from
11:00am until 3:30pm.
That way we get daylight throughout the working day...
All you have to remember every year is
"Spring Forward"
"Fall Back"

You clueless twat!!
Why don't you read what this thread is about you fuckwit.
What was being proposed is that rather than change the clocks..people
should just change their working hours..so rather than start work at
9am..they start at 8am
So explain to me how in that scenario..working hours would stay the
same???? Prat!!!
It really amuses me when a wanker like you comes into a thread and hurls
insults around..and is then shown to be a complete fucking idiot.
Run along now, you gimp!

Try reading the bit I quoted. There seem to be a lot of clueless people who think
changing the clocks is all about making it lighter in winter mornings for the Scots.

Don't need daylight when I am at work, the big problem is they shift the clocks
the wrong way in the winter.

The clocks concerned are incorporated into the CCTV video recording
systems on the buses owned by the bus company I work for, in order that
the CCTV footage is correctly dated/timestamped if required for evidence
by police, etc. in the event of an onboard incident.
I have enough work to do without spending the best part of a full day
adjusting clocks..!

The newer digital systems do self-adjust, but we still have an awful lot
of old VHS-based systems.

Why not just adjust them to GMT, and leave them as that?
If you get your company to issue a policy memo saying that all CCTV
clocks will be set to GMT year round, you should be covered (IANAL)
