Default PAYG phone on SIM-only monthly tariff?

Does the SIM lock on a PAYG phone typically just lock it to the
network, or would it be locked to a specific SIM? The reason I ask is
that I'm thinking of buying a cheap PAYG phone then putting in a SIM
from a SIM-only monthly tariff (from the same network) as a slightly
cheaper alternative than paying an extra tenner or so a month for a
cheap "free" phone.

Thanks,

Neil

Every "locked" phone that I have owned has been network-locked and not
SIM locked. So what you are suggesting doing is likely to be fine.
Locking phones to specific SIMs is possible, but is rarely if ever
done in the UK.

As another alternative, you can ring up the network and simply say "I
am a PAYG customer and I would like to change to Pay Monthly using
your SIM only tariff and my existing handset. At least some networks
are happy to do this without you having to even change your SIM.

Then you have never had Vodafone or Virgin PAYT phones,
many of them are GID1 locked to the sim type.

Best thing it get them unlocked which will clear all the locks.
CPW sell most of their PAYT phones as unlocked GSM stock
(except Orange)
