SWBO is currently finishing a 100% cashback contract, on Orange, and
wants to take out a new similar cashback deal. However AFAICS all the
decent cashback deals at the moment are with Orange (unless anyone can
point me in a different direction?), which would prevent her from
porting her number from the old contract to the new one.
I'm therefore wondering about porting the old number to a temporary PAYG
sim card with another network, thereby terminating the old Orange
contract; starting a new Orange contract and then porting the number in
to that.
How quickly could that process happen?
Is there anything to watch out for in terms of not being able to PAC out
of the PAYG SIM, such as any network not allowing it?

I have done this a couple of times in the past, using a Virgin sim.
Any PAC code is valid for 30 days.
Hence on the 31st day after being given the first PAC code you can
request another PAC code and go back to Orange.

Another example of RAS syndrome (Redundant Acronym Syndrome) :-)

Ok, thanks, so if Day 31 is the day you request the 2nd PAC from Virgin
(and straightaway give it to Orange), on what day do you give the 1st
PAC to Virgin? Can you do it on Day 29 or 30, ie the minimum possible?
I'm thinking in terms of how long SWMBO would be without her 'proper'
contract phone (ie with the 'correct' number)...

Don't think I'd cut it quite so fine, even with the advent of 2 day
porting nowadays (used to be 7).The gaining network has to put in an
application to port the number before the PAC runs out, then the
number should port within 2 days.
I wouldn't want to be talking to Virgin about porting a number out
before it's even ported in!

Just following this up... the number's due to port over to a Tesco PAYG
sim tomorrow, which will kill off the old Orange contract; the new
Orange contract has just started in parallel today (on a random new
number), so as soon as we dare, we need to ask for a PAC code from Tesco
to give back to Orange, for the new contract...
Question is - how soon dare we do this? Is there anything actually
dodgy about doing it asap - other than Tesco maybe being a bit stroppy,
can they do refuse or do anything about it? (We haven't actually even
put any credit on the PAYG sim!)
