Default porting confusion

I'm looking at 12month 'free' cash back deals, and want to port a
three PAYG number to the new contract deal.

Some of the online traders say they can't port numbers to various
networks, but reading ofcom and other info.
it looks easy to port to any different network.

What is the restriction the mobile dealers are tied to? and am I going
to be unable to port if I take some of these contracts out?

Is porting a number to a 'free' deal, likely to give any problems when
claiming cash back?

Thanks
DD

I think I can explain the confusion surrounding porting and cashback
deals - it is indeed possible to port to any of the networks as long as
you are changing network.

With Three, T-Mobile and Orange you can request the port AFTER
connection with no consequences for your cashback as long as you read
the T&Cs from the retailer carefully and submit the necessary proof of
the port-in with your first claim, where it is requested.

It is also (apparently) possible to port into Vodafone and O2 after
connection - However, it is said that these networks bizarrely treat
such a port request as a disconnection and reconnection which results in
a clawback of the commission from the retailer and, hence, voids your
cashback eligibility by virtue of the disconnection. I can't say for
certain whether this is indeed true, but it's what I've been told from
more than one source.

If you wish to port to Vodafone or O2, the retailer can deal with this
for you at the point of purchase without any negative consequences for
either their commission or your cashback eligibility. However, not all
retailers offer porting services and it is retailers that don't do
porting that will tell you that you simply can't port your number to O2
or Vodafone. While this isn't strictly true (based on the above), to say
anything else would be to the detriment of your cashback.

Reestit, thanks for the explanation, it's what I wanted to know.

I was interested in a Nokia 6300 but the only free deals i've seen are
with vodafone, and porting in doesn't look to be an option, given your
explanation.

I'm also interested in an X820 which I've seen on the T-mobile flext,
which looks to be viable to port to after getting the phone.

Thanks
DD

No problem Paul. I'm happy to have cleared up the confusion for you.

Yup...it is a little annoying that some of the best deals to be found
(including the 6300 12 months free line rental one that you are
referring to) are currently only available from Phonebox Direct and Cool
New Mobile on Vodafone as it seems that they don't offer a porting
service for their customers.

Of course...there's a lot of competition at the moment with other
retailers constantly adding new handsets to their biggest cashback
deals. In my opinion, it may only be a matter of time before a retailer
which offers a porting service offers the 6300 with 12 months free on
Vodafone or the handset appears with 12 months free on another network
(the odds are it would be either T-Mobile or Orange).

cheers,
