Price of SIM cards.

Not having bought a SIM card for some time, when I only paid £10 for
the price of the calls upon it, I was astonished today to be asked £20
by a well known company for an empty card. Just what is going on?
Another shop wanted £10 for an empty card.

Or free in an Orange Shop - all you have to pay for is a top-up to go
along with it.

I paid a £1 for an orange sim on the local car boot, all sealed, unopened
and ready to go.

Thanks everyone for clearing this up for me. I used to get Virgin SIM
cards for the cost of the calls but when I tried to get a t-Mobile
card from Carphone they wanted £20. However, as t-Mobile are offering
cards for 50p on the net I have ordered one of those. How can these
shops get away with such extortionate charges? Surely no one actually
falls for it? The shop assistant did seem surprised when I intially
showed interest but I assumed at that point that it included the call
charges.

The last 2 virgin sims I got were free (Virgin promotion) and included
£5 credit on each.

The last Virgin one I had didn't come with any credit (it was after the
£5 promo) but after I ported in my O2 mobile number they kindly credited
me with £5 (automatically I'm assuming, the (very helpful) CS person
hadn't mentioned anything about it).
