Default problem with a V3

Hi... I have a motorola V3. Just a couple of weeks left on the warranty.
But I have a problem with it.
Every now and again the screen goes blank ( still lit up though) . The
only way to get it working again is to turn the phone off & on again. I
took the battery & sim card out and cleaned the contacts. This seemed to
improve matters for a few days , but the problem has returned.
I can take it to a repair centre to have it looked at under warranty. But
the repair centre is a long way away.
If it is a problem with the phone I will get it taken in I suppose , but if
it is simply a problem with the battery , then I prefer just to buy a new
battery rather than mess about taking it to be repaired.
What do you think?? Is it a problem with the phone or a dodgy battery (or
even sim card??)

Or maybe a firmware problem?

Hi.. thanks for that.. bit puzzled why it is not covered under 12 months
warranty.. How can it be acceptable for this cable to wear out in less than
a year?
