For starters, don't use Vodafone, T-Mobile, or O2. My experience is
that they all deactivate SIMS if they aren't used for a specific length
of time (180 days?).

Last week I wanted to use an old T-Mobile SIM, but it had been
deactivated. It had GBP10.60 of credit on it, but T-Mobile wanted to
charge me a tenner to reactivate it. A polite email to their customer
service department got that fee dropped and the SIM working again.
