Not true. You /can/ buy one and not register it. You'd then be free to
unlock it and do whatever you wanted.

Well if anyone was stoopid enough to buy an iPhone, and in
the mac group there are, some guy named Ian who not only
already had a company cell phone, still went and wasted his
money, but if anyone having swallowed up by the hype there
are some good reasons for unlocking the silly low spec iPhone,
the obvious example being if one travels abroad frequently,
making calls/texts via O2 incurs additional costs for calls made
outside UK, so an unlocked iPhone can then use cheaper pre-
paid local sim cards etc, the user is still with O2 and all it's
overpriced functions, but in many circumstances an unlocked
iPhone can save the sucker some additional O2 costs.
But it's the deviant behaviour of Apple that is the worry, if
someone is so erectile dysfunctional that they just have to have
the latest gadget, and in this example, were to buy online from
abroad an unlocked iPhone without contract, well iPhones are
not marketed "fully uptodate functional" they all require critical
updates only available via the contract with O2, but also, all
iPhones need a firmware update flash, and that firmware is
available to freely download online, but if installed on an unlocked
iPhone - the firmware "kills" unlocked iPhones. I understand
there are German iPhone users who are now attempting legal
anti competition suites against both Apple and the German
telecom and it's contract.
And there are thousands of wankers who have wasted their
money on this soon to be obsolete gadget.
But all you have to do is look in the mac groups to see there
are people who don't do their homework, it's from Apple and
they will waste their money on the silly low specification iPhone.
The Nokia outperforms and is better spec then the iPhone, and
who thinks a Blackberry user would bother with the girly iPhone.

justification. Isn't it just as reasonable to say that people have a
right to call other people names, if they spend their money in a way

The price of the iphone itself is well within the price of reason, and is
highly competitive compared to pda phones.
However, Apple, like Tivo, are basing their business model on getting an
income stream from the phone provider.

Apple clearly hadnt done their homework for the European market, expecting
that we would be happy with what americans are. SMS and MMS are far more
used over here, and all new phones are expected to be 3g.

Not refinning the iphone to make it 3g was a major error from Apple.

I think you are mistaken about the scope for the iphone though, it is more
then the sum of its parts, which is, essentially the most stylish mp3 player
on the market place, and a phone with some novel features.

You don't have to sign-up for the contract. When you buy the phone you
do just that, pay £269 and walk out of the store. The O2 sign-up is
done from home. So there are good reasons to get it unlocked!

Not sure which Nokia you are writing about, but yes I agree there are
some Nokia phones that have a better spec than the iPhone.

Once you have tried an iPhone though, you realise that when it comes
to performance it leaves all Nokia's standing despite the lower spec.

the built in GPS show anything meaningful!

There is even a GSM engineering mode function built in for those in
the industry.

Hi Harry, you do realise you are only trying to convince yourself.
Both Stateside and Germany legal action is instigated against
Apple and the relevent telecom contract.
Stateside Apple dropped the price by $200, there are some seriously
pissed early adopters.
Dispite the carefully engineered hype surrounding it's launch and
the much reported all night geek line at the Regent street store,
the actual take up is not that impressive, follow the links on the
Telegraph and Timesonline sites, and read independent analyists
reports/predictions.
The iPhone has built-in obselecense, it's now november, once Xmas
has passed the price will drop (but not for anyone who bought now
and are locked to the ridiculously overpriced O2 contract).
Spring will see the launch of the replacement (Which is planned
and is waiting patiently in the wings) which will be 3g, 6mg etc
for a fraction of the cost of the current girly iPhone.
Oh, and Apple have at least flagged the required firmware update
as not for hacked iPhones which it will permenantly incapacitate.
