if you can connect it to a pc, just copy a mp3 file over!

At a guess, have you a vodafone K750i, if so, they restrict you from using
mp3 as ringtones. If its not vodafone just find the file via the file
manager (it does need to be moved to ringtones, maybe you don't have enough
internal mem space) select 'More' and 'Use as' and select ringtone.

If you need to trim the mp3 use program mp3directcut

I have just this. I have two questions, why and how can I get around
this if I want to?

I presume I could get it de-branded? Would this cause me to lose the
contents of my memory?

Does this compress beyond normal limits or cut it to length?

Probably as you would need to reflash it.

I use it just to cut bits out of a mp3 files to use as ringtones. Just
select the start & end within the mp3 file and save as another file.
