It's probably stolen. Have you checked its blacklisting status by
calling T-Mobile?

Thanks Jon,

Will give that a try, I use the phone in Bulgaria on a local network
and it works fine. Also the shop I purchased it from is one of the few
legitimate businesses in Bulgaria and is doubtful that it is stolen.
