The NK402 is single band, so will be limited as to which networks it can
connect to.
I've no idea about French networks, but I'd assume that there are fewer
transmitters on your band than there are in the UK, hence poor coverage
for you.

Then they are wrong. The NK-402 is a single band 1800 MHz phone, in
the same way as the Nokia 5130 (T-Mobile). The 900 MHz equivalent was
the Nokia 5110 (Voda or O2/Cellnet). I still have both of these
'vintage' phones that work well.
