All Orange SIMs have to be registered. You don't get issued a number on
PAYG without it, and contract ones will only let you call the
registrations dept.

A good idea IMHO. Not issuing a number until a SIM is going to be used is
something all networks should do. Then we wouldn't need so many numbers as
there wouldn't be warehouses full of phones, all with numbers allocated,
not being used. Think of how many wasted numbers get issued to unsold
phones, only to be consigned to the bin without ever going on line as the
person buying the phone ports an existing number in.

This is no longer the case, and hasn't been for about a year. SIMs come
in a state of activation known internally as "active, not registered"
which is fairly self explanatory.

Un-registered SIMs will work, but receive no promotional benefits, eg
magic number, credit or text top-up reward etc.

Even PAYG ones..? I have a couple of unregistered ones here somewhere,
they definitely don't have any numbers on the packaging. Not sure how old
they are though, probably a bit longer than a year.

Never use 'em anyway.

Try pressing either up or down volume from the standby screen, on most SE
phones this gives the phone status screen which shows the inserted SIM's
phone number.

I'm talking exclusive about PAYG ones!

It is likely then that these are non pre-activated and would still
require registration in the traditional sense of the word.

The SIM field "own number" will only be populated once activation has
been completed by a dealer, or once you fully register your personal
details and SIM updates are received.

Having topped up the phone the easiest way to discover the number is to
call someone else's mobile and see what number pops up.

It is possible to do it on the website.
