I can confirm that thhe MDA Compact III does not have Wifi.

Apparently Tmobile have bought a little known model from HTC that
actually does not have Wifi in it, so can not be hacked. There are
apparently two versions produced by HTC.
Memory slot is inside so that is no good for a wireless card either. A
colleague of mine bought one and went through exactly what you have. He
decided to keep it saying that with Web 'n Walk there is probably less
need for it.
