The earpieces that come with most handsets include a microphone and can be
used to make and receive voice calls; there have been third party 'wired
headsets' as well, for several years, of which the one you've spotted is
merely a variation. Of course, you don't get stereo sound while using it
as a telephone - the software in the handset works out what signals to
send to each contact in the connector.
