Yes, for most smartphones at least.

But do they support a microphone connection? I thought it was just a 3 pole
3.5mm jack for left & right audio out and common return.

No, I'd say most of them are TRRS so they can use a handsfree
earphones/mic, usually doubles as the FM aerial too and can often have
pause/play, ff/rw buttons on a soap-on-a-rope midway along the cable.

The earpieces that come with most handsets include a microphone and can be
used to make and receive voice calls; there have been third party 'wired
headsets' as well, for several years, of which the one you've spotted is
merely a variation. Of course, you don't get stereo sound while using it
as a telephone - the software in the handset works out what signals to
send to each contact in the connector.
