Depends on the network. Some of the various flavours of US systems don't
handle text. It's not a big thing over there the way it is here.

From O's website:

Pay As You Go customers

Talk Now will cost you 20p for each 30 minute session or part of it.
However, you will never be charged more than £1 a day on Talk Now in
the UK. Once you've used up 5 sessions, the rest are free for the day!

If you are a new user to Talk Now you can get the first three months
free, just ask for the Talk Now bundle when you call 450 to get Talk
Now set up.

Pay Monthly customers

When you use Talk Now to talk to one other person it costs 15p a
minute. When you talk to between two and nine others it costs 30p per
minute.

Indeed, seems to be going this way, decent retention offers seem few
and far between.

Last time I was in Vancouver some friends GSM mobiles on the Fido network
didn't even have SMS (send or receive) included in their (basic) price plan!

Amazing - I don't have it included in my Orange (UK) 'price plan' either.

:-)

Texting is actually beginning to pick up here big time! But, it will
probably never be as big as it is down there. Primarily because, call
cost here are very cheap. We all have inclusive minutes and unlimited
nights and weekends to call anywhere in the US. So, it does not really
cost us anything to call each other. Also, it does not cost us extra to
call a land line VS a mobile. i.e. There is nothing like free incoming
calls here like you guys have for your mobiles(we do not diffeentiate
between mobile and land lines). But, we do have so many minutes that
it's not an issue.

Most carriers also have text plans though. But, still, people would
rather call than text. Why waste tiem typing on the phone when it does
not cost anything to actually call the person...as long as they are in
the US. About 90% of the textting I do is internationally, since it
obviously costs more to call international from the mobile.

Just shows how little understanding there is of SMS where you are.

Texting is not instead of calls. It's a completely different form of
communication.

Lots of places have effectively unlimited call minutes (well, the user
has been suckered into a price plan with too many minutes included so
as to get a subsidised handset) but that doesn't stop them texting all
the time.
