Can I configure my mobile (SE w200i on Orange) only to receive texts when
it's switched on? I want to do this with calls as well but I presume I just
disable voicemail?

I'm yet to see a phone that receives calls or texts whilst switched off.

Okay okay. What I should have said is not to allow texts/calls to be sent to
a mobile that is switched off.

The SMSC will store texts that someone sends when your phone is off,
when you switch back on they get delivered, there is a validity period
so that if you switch your phone off for weeks/months the old messages
get deleted.

You could use call barring. *35*1111# to activate an incoming calls
and texts bar. #330*1111# to cancel all bars. (assuming you haven't
changed your barring password which, on Orange is 1111).
Not sure if Orange will deliver the texts once you remove the bar or
not but you could give it a try? You'd need to activate/deactivate it
as required though. The settings can also be activated in the phone's
menu somewhere if its easier.

I've just tried activating using the phone's menu instead of typing
the code and it only activated the bar for voice calls - the GSM codes
above activated calls, video calls, messages so you'd probably need to
use them instead!
Not that it applies to the OP but call barring is only available on
Vodafone, Orange and 3.
Default codes are 1919 for Vodafone and 1111 for Orange. Not sure
about 3.
You can change from the default using *03*330*oldPIN*newPIN*newPIN#

Assuming it's not PAYG, you can effectively bar voice-calls only by
setting a divert to a non-existent number.

Vodafone and Orange support it for PAYG SIMs as well.
