Registering a new SIM with upgrade but selling phone? (Orange)
Hi everyone,
I'm on Orange and recently upgraded my C600 to an M600 and in the
process was given a new SIM. Whilst trialling the phone for the 7 days
I used my old SIM to enable the process of returning the phone (and new
SIM) that much simpler should I decide to keep it.
I kept the phone and have been using it (still with the old SIM) for a
couple of weeks now however yesterday I was unable to connect to GPRS
(it was working fine for the two weeks prior). I wondered if it was
anything to do with me not registering/using the new SIM so phoned
Orange who confirmed it 'probably' was so I went ahead and registered
the new one. The old SIM was subsequently cancelled and the the new one
activated. GPRS access returned once more.
However, my question (finally) is that my girlfriend recently took
advantage of the free Nokia upgrade on her OVP Virgin account. She's
decided that she doesn't like the new phone so will be sticking it on
eBay. Should she still register her new SIM given that my old one
seemingly was being restricted to certain services (accorind to Orange)
- might that happen to her? Furthermore, I was actually phoning Orange
to register my *phone* (according to the supplied documentation) yet
she won't be - she'll be keeping her old phone yet using the new SIM.
Which phone will be 'registered' against her account? Will/can Orange
care that she's planning on selling it?
Of course in an ideal world I'd phone Orange and hear it from the
horse's mouth however I can't help but feel I might as well be
literally doing just that...

That should of course read '...decide to *not* keep it.'

Judging by the 'Orange GPRS off?' thread it sounds like my use of the
old SIM had absolutely nothing to do with GPRS no longer working - it
was a widespread network issue.
Notwithstanding this, can anyone advise on whether she should be using
the new SIM? And whether Orange should be told that she's still using
her old Nokia (I'm coming from the angle that say if her phone gets
nicked it'd be nice to be able to phone Orange and say that her phone,
which is presumably registered on her account, is nicked hence please
bar it - I sure don't want to get into the inevitable sorry sir that's
not the phone we've got on this account....)

Given the above re GPRS the person I spoke to obviously hadn't been
made aware of the wider issue currently affecting it.

You should always register your upgrade and use the new SIM, as it says
on the invoice you get with the phone. (apparently they self-register
if still unregistered after a set period of time..)

I'm pretty sure our invoices say to phone and register the *handset*.
Not wanting to sound pendantic, it's just that we specifically don't
want to register the handset given it's going to be sold - presumably
registering the handset would also associate it with the account (with
all the consequences this may bring should it get lost/stolen as
mentioned).
I'll give them a call, but as I said I'm not confident I'll get told
the right thing so thought I'd post here for others' views.

On both of my upgrades, they wanted to know the number, the SIM number
and the contract number.
The didn't want to know IMEI of the new phones.
One of my new SIMs is sat working in my new 6230i (a step on from the
6230 in some ways but not in others), and the other is working well in
the missus' old phone (with the 6070 being flogged for enough to cover
the cost of the new 6230i)

They'll already have the IMEI on their system when you give them the
other info.
You may not want to register the handset as your upgrade, but it *was*
your upgrade, so you have to! The only thing you have to remember is
if your phone ever gets lost/stolen make sure they bar the handset you
were using, rather than the handset associated with your account (all
your 6070's!). It's not going to stop anyone else registering it as
their phone if Orange ask the new owners for an IMEI.
If you don't register it, it will just happen automatically after x
amount of days - and its far better to specify the time for your SIM
swap rather than have it happen when you're least expecting it (and
nowhere near the new SIM).

In theory yes, however when I phoned up to report a stolen phone a
couple of years back, I told them at that point that the phone wasn't
the one that was originally supplied with the SIM.
The Orange rep checked back against my billing records and confirmed the
make and model of the phone from the IMEI on the records and blocked
that one.

And quite right that is too.

I registered the SIMs by phone, and they switched over within a couple
of hours as expected

Okay, thanks guys for the input. We'll register the new SIM and just
tell them the new phone won't be being used (for what that's worth).
