Default Request advice about which instant messaging to use when phone line is busy

I would like to ask you specialists for some advice.

I got a good discount on one of those phone tariffs which include
unlimited calls, so now the line gets very busy.

As my PC is on all day I could set up some sort of instant messaging for
when the line is engaged. The idea is that one or two friends could
send me a message if the phone is engaged. ("I'm back", "Need to speak
urgently", etc.)

I could key in a few words of reply even if I'm speaking on a call.
("Can't interrupt this important call", etc.)

I haven't got any experience with instant messaging and know nothing
about what's available. Can you advise which messaging service would be
a good one for me and what software I should install. I'm on a budget
so I want to keep costs right down.

Lem

Certainly Windows Live Messenger allows messages to you through even
when you are not signed in and you can see them when you do sign in so
if u are on the phone but have forgotten to sign in you'll know
someone was wanting to get in touch . I don't know that Yahoo or
Windows Messenger has much difference between them .
They don't cost anything anyway . I'm assuming this is the sort of
messaging you are meaning other than those VOIP thingys .
One tip: Change your contacts to a recognisable nickname as u might
not recognise the sign-in name used by them and some folk keep
changing the name used so that makes it even more confusing .

I'm not aware of any IM services that cost. If all you want to do is
simple messaging, I suggest you install a third-party IM client like
Pidgin, that way you can log in to all your accounts simultaneously
through the one client that's the same on Windows, Linux and Mac.
