Default Roaming

I recently went to Ireland and couldn't connect to any networks, even
manually connecting showed "No access" on each network.

I'm on T-Mobile, did I need to contact them first?
Also my number is ported.

If you are on contract you need to contact Customer Services to have the
roaming bar lifted, if ir is a Pay as you talk phone it should work
automatically.

Yes, you need to check that roaming is enabled before travelling,
even if they say it is, it may not be.

A few years ago before i travelled i called Orange to check my
roaming was enable, when i got to Oslo i found it wasn't, so had
to call Orange CS from a payphone in Oslo to get them to sort it
