Default Samsung Galaxy Apollo and Virgin PAYG

My wife's new Apollo is seemingly unable to send/receive photos via text
messaging.

The messages take an age to receive and always tell her to visit the
virgin mobile website to view the message/photo. Sending a photo results
in it sitting on the phone for days 'sending' until deleted.

I've checked the settings on the VM website and also spoken to Virgin
service desk ( a delightful lass in Manilla) but to no avail.

The phone is wifi enabled to connect to wifi networks but the following
services are *switched off* to avoid data usage (it is used purely as a
phone/texting):
use package data
data roaming

Settings in the Access Point Names are:
Name - Virgin MMS
APN - goto.virginmobile.uk
Proxy - not set
Port - not set
User name - not set
Password - not set
Server - not set
MMSC - http//mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002
MMS proxy - 193.30.166.2
MMS Port - 8080
MCC - 234
MNC -30
Authentification type - PAP or CHAP
APN type - mms

FYI Virgin's website has the following:

Setting up the Device
On the device, tap the Menu icon.
Select Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Access Point
Names.
Press the Menu key and tap New APN.
Select Name, enter Virgin MMS and tap OK.
Select APN, enter goto.virginmobile.uk and tap OK.
Enter the user name and password listed below. If no value is listed,
leave the field blank.
User name:
Password:
Select MMSC, enter http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002 and tap OK.
Select MMS proxy, enter 193.30.166.2 and tap OK.
Select MMS port, enter 8080 and tap OK.
Select APN type, enter mms and tap OK.
Press the Menu key and select Save

The settings are saved and the service is ready for use.

Setting details

Below are the details of your settings
Name: Virgin MMS
IP Address: 193.30.166.2
Username: (none)
Password: (none)
Homepage: http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002
Server Address: goto.virginmobile.uk

What am I doing wrong????

Thanks,

David

I think you will find "use packet data" needs to be turned on to send MMS
(picture) messages

I don't think you have 3G (UMTS) turned on.

From:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multime...saging_Service

"The method for determining whether a handset is MMS capable is not
specified by the standards. A database is usually maintained by the
operator, and in it each mobile phone number is marked as being
associated with a legacy handset or not. It can be a bit hit and miss
since customers can change their handset at will and this database is not
usually updated dynamically."

How new is the new Apollo ?

A couple of months maybe and Virgin are aware that it is a replacement
phone with a swapped over sim card

Ok - I'll get her to try switching on 3g and use package data.
Alternatively she'll just have to learn how to attach a photo to an email
on wifi network and get others to send them to her the same way.

Thanks to you both for your suggestions.

The fact that "Use Packet Data" is off will stop MMS working. (The "P" in
GPRS, which is what MMS needs to work, stands for "Packet") Also be aware
that on T-Mobile & it's virtuals (i.e. Virgin) a handset cannot receive a
MMS until it has successfully sent one.

Cheers, Steve.

Thanks Steve. I guess that smartphones aren't as smart as her old (8/9
years at least) nokia which sent/received photos using dumb technology <g>

She's now sending them via her email account from the phone using wifi -
so at least she's now using email!

David
