I have a Palm Zire (about 4 years old) that is literally falling
apart. It's relatively simple and straightforward, but does what I
want very well;
- information about contacts, including multiple numbers, email
addresses, web sites, and a general "notes" page (to keep general
information about contacts)
- organise contacts into categories (eg Friends, Family, Suppliers,
etc)
- diary entries, including recurring, alarms, and general purpose
"notes" page
- "to do" list (I use it mainly for shopping ["bread", "butter"]
etc. Means I don't need to carry paper and pen, and it's always with
me!)
- handwriting recognition
- backup to PC
- search the entire organiser (notes, contacts, diary, etc) for
terms.
As it will soon stop working, I'm thinking about it's replacement.
When I bought it mobile phones weren't quite sophisticated enough
organisers, and PDA were rubbish phones so I had to make do with two
devices.
Now I need a replacement for the PDA. I'm happy for a standalone PDA
such as another Palm, but wonder if a mid-priced phone would work. I
have my eye on the SE K800i at around £160 on PAYG.
Anyone got any opinions? The demo on the SE web site is a bit naff,
and the documentation VERY vague!
I know the K800i can do all these things, I just don't know how well!
>From other searches, the SE W960 would seem like a perfect fit, but I
would wait 18-24 months for the price to fall and, more importantly,
the bugs to be ironed out.

Had a look at a unit at the local Orange shop. The "Notes" tab has a
limit of about 30 characters. Not much use if, for example, you add a
company as a contact, then want to store directions, opening hours,
terms, etc.

A standard "dumb" phone will certainly let you down on PDA functionalities.
Although mid-to-high range dumb phones now have feature list long enough to
fit a 500 pages book, most of these features are effectively unusable for
any serious work. There're just quick hacks added for the sake of adding a
new line on the feature list but have never been designed to be actually
used extensively.
If you're looking at replacing your PDA, you'll really need to consider
getting either another PDA and a cheap dumb phone or a smartphone that
could replace both. The SE M600i could be a good fit for you. Or maybe one
of the Nokia E-series (E61i for example) although you might find that the
Nokia UI and built-in applications are a little bit too simplistic for you
if you're an advanced PDA user. Don't forget the Windows Mobile based
smartphones. They've gone a long way since the awful Windows Mobile 2003
based models and are now perfectly usable devices although many still
suffer from poor, plastici build quality.

I've a lot of faith in the Zire (software-wise!) but only recall
horror stories from users of Windows Mobile phones. Might have
another look at them.
