I'm looking to buy a mobile phone. I've currently got a trusty old
Palm Zire PDA, and basic phone. The Palm Zire is 3-4 years old and
literally falling apart, but it's a great basic PDA. I use it mainly
to
- store notes (directions, recipes, technical stuff for work, etc)
- contacts (it has a notes feature, so I can add as much notes as I
need)
- calendar, including recurring events (daily, weekly, annually)
- backup to PC
- search for a term in all applications (so, for example, if I enter
a name it will search for it in contacts, calendar, memos, etc). This
is CRITICAL!
- handwriting recognition
I'd like a phone that does this so I only have to carry one device. I
know the Nokia E65 is capable, but still quite expensive. Are there
any SE W950i owners out there who can comment on whether the W950i is
a suitable replacement? I've read around as much as I can, but no web
sites seem to go into any detail. I know the W950i isn't considered a
full blown PDA, but I don't need something particularly powerful!

Up until you said this I would have pointed to any PDA phone really,
however this universal search is not something I've encountered before.
Great idea though - are you listening Microsoft?

I suppose the whole point of an organiser is that your information is,
erm, organised. But sometimes you just need a search feature as
well! I had a play with the E65 at a Superdrug store recently, and
the search seemed to be a feature of some Office-type application on
there.
I've even resorted to tracing the OS to Symbian 9.1 and search the
PDF, but it only covers searching contacts :-(
I'm sure there's lots of W950i users out there. Others mention it's
can be slow and buggy, but the most recent firmware update vastly
improves that. It's due to be replaced by the W960i imminently so
it's now available quite cheap (£170ish at Amazon and Expansys), but I
don't know how long...
Come on W950i owners - share your thoughts and experiences!

If your Palm Zire has a touchscreen, think hard before buying a new one that
does not have a touchscreen. It can be very hard to adjust and you may find
you miss it too much.
If money is on a tight budget here are a couple of models under £200 that
you might be interested in.
If you are happy with factory reconditioned models, then this HP IPAQ is a
steal which has almost everything including GPS http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=154750
