seeking advise on payg and using a phone card

Appreciate some advice,

I am on a payg plan but occasionally I need to make a larger number of calls
but still no enough to warrant going onto a contract as it is not every
month.

I was wondering if it is possible to save on call costs by using a telephone
card with my mobile similar to when using a phone card with a land line.
