Default Sony Ericsson W810i query

Hi

I've got the above phone on a vodafone contract. Imagine my suprise when I
found on my latest bill I've been charged for browsing using my wap. I've
only recently got this phone and with all previous phones I've never been
charged for using my wap.

So I ring vodaphone customer support who tell me that because I connect
using the Sony Ericsson site then going onto the vodaphone live webpage, I
get charged. I was put through to their technical department, who rang me
back on my landline (very nice of them!) so they could go through with me
and help me change my settings on my mobile to make vodafone live my
homepage. Guess what?!?!? The instructions they gave, still didn't reset my
homepage, so I'm still going to be charged to use my wap. The chap finally
told me he's stumped and can't offer any more help other than to advise me
that if I wanted to use my wap I'd have to either put up with being charged
or to put my sim back in my old phone, use my wap then swap phones again!

Has anyone got any ideas how I can permanently change my homepage so each
time I connect to wap, I'm going via vodafone live rather than the sony
ericsson site? I've tried looking on the sony ericsson website but can't
find anything. Just thought someone may be able to help me here before I go
emailing sony ericsson and waiting a lifetime for a response from them.

TIA
Netty

Hi,

Working for Vodafone I've never come across that problem with a W810i
before. I'm using an earlier model (W900i) and the homepage is
automatically set to go directly through the Vodafone Live! portal.
It's slightly different but have you checked that you're connecting to
the internet through packet switch (GPRS) rather than circuit switch
(CSD)? I'm presuming the menus are the same with us both having Sony
Ericsson's but you can usually check this by going to 'settings',
'connectivity', 'data comm', 'preferred service' then higlighting 'PS
and CS' rather than 'CS only'. (PS only charges for the data you
download, CS only will charge you per minute).

If you still have problems it might be worth taking your phone into a
Vodafone store who could look into sorting out a repair job for you (if
it is a faulty software issue you may still be covered by the warranty
provided by Vodafone and the manufacturer). If you wanted to you could
also drop our customer services online team an email by going to
www.vodafone.co.uk, selecting 'contact us' then 'email'. (if you leave
the code FIT135 at the beginning of your email this will make sure it
gets routed through to a member of a specific team who pick up customer
queries on internet messageboards and forums).

Ideally, my first advice would still be a Vodafone store as they'd be
able to check the full settings manually before considering the
possibility of a repair / exchange job. There's a store locator on our
website if you need more information:

Functioning Vodafone handset software does connect to the Live! portal
upon clicking the appropriate menu icon. Manually altering the SE Wap
Homepage settings shouldn't alter this; but would alter the wap browser
menu homepage entry, which is accessible once a connection has already
been made [in your case to the SE wapsite].

A workaround may be to save the Vodafone Live! wap page as a browser
Bookmark/Favourite. Then access the Bookmark/Favourite list of the
handset Activity menu [there should be a specialised button for this,
or try clicking up the joystick from the standby display]. Click on the
Live! bookmark. This should trigger a wap connection straight to the
Vodafone portal.
