Everytime I push the joystick upwards it activates the activity menu which
obliterates everything on the screen. The activity menu is available with the
menu button anyway. Is there any way that I can disable/delete this feature?

Go to the menu, choose Settings. Scroll down to Shortcuts; you can
select whatever you want the shortcut to be for moving the joystick up,
down, left and right.

I've done that. Navig. key up has Activity menu assigned to it. when I select
another option, I just get a message saying 'Cannot set as a shortcut', and
yet it has Activity menu as a shortcut.

When you have navigated to the other option, which of the buttons under
the screen are you pressing? One will say "select" - that's what you use
to go into a further menu. The other says "shortcut" - that's the one
you need to set the shortcut. Not very intuitive, I know.
There are some of the options which have "select" greyed-out - maybe
it's one of those that you're pressing "select" on? Those are the ones
where there's no further menu to select; if you press "shortcut" for
them, I think they all work.

Okay, here's what I'm doing *exactly* :-)
Settings/General/Shortcuts as you've described.
Press "Select" or press the joystick in, to enter the shortcuts menu.
You should see a screen that says:
Navig key up
****
Navig key right
****
Navig key down
****
Navig key left
****
- with the asterisks replaced with whatever your shortcuts are currently
set to.
Highlight the one you want to change - the "Navig key up" one.
To disable it entirely, press the button just under the screen, on the
right - the screen above it says "More".
The two options are:
Set to Main Menu
Deactivate
Highlight "Deactivate", select it by pressing the button just below the
left corner of the screen (the one below the word "select") or by
pressing the joystick in. That deactivates that shortcut button
completely.
Or you can set it to go to your choice of action - for example, mine is
set to show the list of profiles, so that I can switch profiles easily.
To do that:
When you have the "Navig key up" option highlighted, press the button
just under the screen, on the left - the screen just above it says
"Edit".
That will show you the screen with icons for messaging etc. Go to the
one you want; let's say it's the list of profiles as mine is.
On the screen of icons, go to what you want. When you move to some of
the icons, the word "Select" is greyed out. That's because those options
do not lead to further menus. You can still choose those for your
shortcut, however, by pressing the button under the word "Shortcut"
(just under the bottom right corner of the screen).
For the options that aren't greyed out, you can either select them as a
shortcut (using the "shortcut" button) or you can go further into the
menus, by pressing the "select" button).
In my case, I'd highlight "settings", press "select", highlight
"profiles", press "select", highlight "select profile", press
"shortcut". It then jumps back to the point where "Navig key up" was
highlighted, and right underneath those words, it says "Select profile".
Having done all that, if you press the joystick up, it displays the list
of profiles.

When I select Navig. key up there is no 'more' displayed, but there is on all
the other navigation choices! Therefore, I have no choice to de-activate it
from the 'more' menu. The Navig up option looks greyed out to me. It all
seems crazy to me.

I went for a reset, but it I got a prompt for a reset code which I don't
know??
