Hello All
A friend of mine has just had his phone stolen.He has reported it to
three and they have disabled the sim.What he wants to know is,would the
phone still work if someone put a new three sim card in it,as all three
said they had done was disabled the sim card as it was on a contract.
Hope this is understandable,as this is all the information I have at
this moment from my friend.

Yes it will still work, so tell him not to go selling it on ebay! Phone
companies often allow phones to be used, it's a loss of revenue if they
don't. There is nothing to stop your friend taking it to a shop and having
the IMEI changed for a tenner first.
People often think of phone insurance as a cheap way to upgrade.
Unless you're extremely careless you shouldn't need it.

Rubbish, the phones IMEI will be added to the CEIR Blacklist
database in Dublin, which is used now by all European networks.
The problem is it could still be used in countries outside that,
like Africa, Asia, etc. which don't use it
Assuming that the phone has been Network unlocked first,
many can be with software and unlocking equipment.

That used to be true in the case of Vodafone, but it was many years ago.

Yeah right. And what shop is going to risk a five year stretch in prison
and a potentially unlimted fine to change the IMEI on a handset of some
unknown twonk that walks in off the street? Even if they were daft enough
to tamper qwith IMEIs, they wouldn't be stupid enough to do it for anyone
they didn't know.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, accidents do happen, and you are still
clueless.

He should have reported it stolen to the police, then phoned the network to
get the phone as well as his sim card barred.

No it won't, it will have been automatically blacklisted.

Thats a very broad statement. Firstly, on some phones it's actually
impossible to change it, and secondly to find a shop that would do it
and openly advertise the fact would also be impossible as IMEI changing
carries a maximum jail sentence of 5 years.

Thanks for all the replies but what is the end conclusion,will the
phone work with a new sim card put in or not,based on the fact that
three only disabled the sim card in the phone and didn't mention
anything about the imei number.

Tell him to ask 3 to "blacklist" the phone.
Then without highly illegal IMEI changing by very difficult suface mount
chip replacement and reprogramming, it can't be used in Europe.
