Is it possible to turn off a return receipt? I don't mean stop me
receiving them back when I send, I mean stop the other person from
getting them when they SMS me. I have a HTC Tytn/Hermes/Vario II and
T-mobile seem unable to tell me whether this is even supported.
If you're using Outlook Express go to "Tools", "Options", "Receipts" Tab,
Uncheck "Request a Read Receipt for all sent messages" Job Done.
Good Luck

The important word to bear in mind when answering my question was the
use of the word 'SMS'. Also that it was posted in uk.telecom.mobile. I
am talking about text message acknowledgement receipts.

ASAIK the answer is No.
The return receipt is not sent by your phone, but from the network
when your phone acknowledges receipt of the SMS.

That went slightly wrong!
It should start AFAIK (As far as I know)!

Before you go making assumptions about peoples' stupidity, it might be
an idea to know what you're talking about, mightn't it? SMS receipts
are a network function, hence why I phoned t-mobile to see if they
could do it. Reading the manual will not help.

So, if I've got this right, someone sends you an SMS and they want to know
that you received it, so they set up their system to ask for a receipt - but
you don't want to tell them that you have indeed received it? You some sort
of dodgy builder who's trying to avoid an irate customer or are you on the
run from the vat man or summat? )

Just out of interest, why do you want to stop them..? I find it rather
useful to know a message I sent has been received by the other end.
In any case, reading your original post, if I understand it correctly, you
don't want people who send you messages to get acknowledgements..? If so,
why..? If they don't want them, they have to get them turned off, you
can't do it.

Perhaps for a reason *similar* to an organisation I worked for which did
not respond to e-mails with receipts or rejections - it makes it much
harder to identify employees and for spammers to find a valid addresses
to target.
However, other than avoiding automated systems trying to identify valid
numbers or not wanting the sender to know that you have received the
message (so you can claim it never arrived!), I cannot see any objection
to this.
