Just received my new phone as part of a contract upgrade,
unfortunately my contract sim is not recognised in the new phone as
it's too old (small memory) according to customer services.
The can send me a new SIM, but I will not be able to use my contract
number while this is in the post, which I'm not that happy with.
I also have a PAYG sim from the same network which I use in an old
phone as backup, this SIM works in the new phone fine.
Is it possible to swap the numbers over across the SIMs - Both SIMs
are same network - Virgin Mobile?

Most phones these days will allow you to copy contacts off the sim into the
phone's own memory.
Once you copied them over put your new sim in and tell the phone which
memory you want to use for contacts in the future. If you only want to use
the sim memory you can copy the contacts in the phone's memory over to you
new sim.

It's not the contacts that I need to swap between the SIM, it's the
actual mobile phone number, the "old" current contract sim is not
recognised in the new phone, according to customer services it is due
to the memory size on the old SIM not being large enough

I don't know the specifics for Virgin, but some networks can swap accounts
onto new SIMs if you phone them up and quote the number on the new SIM
(8944...). Orange can. If your PAYG SIM is already registered it might
cause trouble though. So might be worth getting an unregistered SIM (local
newsagent, pound shop, independent mobile shop) and then phoning them up.

Probably not, but why not continue to use the old SIM in the old phone
for a few days?
