Default Text Abroad - Any Suggestions?

Dear All,

I'm a PAYG Customer with Orange and I'm going on holiday next week to the
Canary Islands (Spain).

It's my first trip abroad and I've just discovered that it's going to cost
me a massive 40p per text and there are no discounts/bundles available for
PAYG Customers.

I've done a Google search and I've come up with http://www.oneroam.co.uk

Is this a good deal as it looks too good to be true? Can anybody else
suggest any better alternatives.

If I get the 'One Roam' I'll have to borrow another phone as my current
Nokia N70 is locked to Orange.

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Kindest regards,

Debi :-)

Be aware when you want to be called. Your caller will be paying a high
international rate. 00423 I believe is the dialcode for these calls.

What about picture messaging? In the case of T-Mobile, 20p a time with
around 1/2 page A4 equivalent in text! You may have to check your
recipients can receive these or get to them via their operator's web
pages (SMS notified).

Purchase a Spanisd sim card - tax free in the canaries - free to
recieve calls and relatively cheaper texts to the UK. Plus you can
usually sell the Sim card when you return

That's what my daughter did, when she was studying in Spain. Worked
very well.

It sounds like you're mostly interested in text messages

There are some mobile Java programs which send an equivalent over wap/
grps data, such as Vyke, smsbug, mobisms, costing 2 to 5 cents each,
plus a penny or two to Orange for the data. Vyke is the cheapest at 2
US cents, and they'll give you $1 of free credit to start with - use
Vyke Lite not Pro, as the latter uses up more data hecking for
messages all the time

There are other global SIMs apart from Oneroam, which has an Estonian
number; some had Isle of Man numbers but they aren't working at the
moment, or see also United Mobile, with a Jersey number.

Not all local SIM have cheap calls - either Vodafone Spain with a 60
for 1 minutes option, or Yoigo or Carrefour have cheap local rates you
could use with a calling card to reach UK, or Lebara can dial direct
for about 5p/min to UK landlines, plus a connection fee of about 30p,
but I don't know anyone who's bought one yet.
