THB car kit and Ford Focus problem

I have a THB Take & Talk carkit with a Sony Ericsson K700i
with the appropriate cradle.
It is installed in a Ford Focus with the standard radio, badged
Ford 6000 CD.

It works OK apart from the following.

The radio is permanently in "PHONE" mode when the phone
is displaying its idle screen.

Selecting recent calls, phonebook or indeed any menu
returns the radio to normal, but exiting to the idle screen
again mutes the radio and it displays "PHONE"

The phone is selecting the "In car" profile and the Car handsfree
accessory is associated with it.

Anyone know what is causing this?
