Interested in this for when I am travelling - any experiences good or bad
out there?
Main concern is what happens when out of a 3G service area - does it roam
on GPRS (slow, I know) and if it does, is this included in the download
allowance?
The Three website is vague on this question, and the Three store I visited
today was thrown by the question.

I am interested in this too but would like a Huawei E220 USB modem SIM
free or unlockable so that I could use it on any network. Three seems
the cheapest at the minute but things could change.
Anybody any idea where I can buy a Huawei E220 sim free modem or get
one unlocked?

I'm delighted with the performance of the Huawei modem on t-mobile.
Connect generally at 3.6Mbps in Dudley and Cardiff.
When HDMI not available then it steps down appropriately, wither to 3G
or lower.
Was in Bodmin the other week and could only connect at 56kbps, but
fine for email.
Haven't been so impressed with a technology since using Netscape in
'93. Why it isn't being pushed by the mobile companies is a mystery to
me.

Expansys sell 'em, http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=141528
Both of the above are in stock atm. They have cheaper products listed but
all are currently out of stock.

Ah, but these are Vodafone branded which presumably means they are
locked to Vodafone. I want a SIM free one which I can use with any
network.

Do a search for "datacard" on ebay which should turn up brand new (branded)
pcmia data cards for about £50 also members who will unlock them for £26
..... this will give you an unlocked card you can use on any network for
under £80. Add a T-mobile web & walk PAYG sim (or two) & you can download up
to 40Mb a day (or 80Mb) for £1.
I was lucky & got a new unlocked Vodafone branded Huawei E620 datacard on
Ebay for £50 all in ...... it works an absolute treat & connects up at 1.8
to 2 Meg & it actually seems snappier than my home broadband connection when
surfing !

The links I provided both went to unbranded sim free products...

That thread seems to suppose that reflashing the Hauwei E220 with
generic firmware will unlock it. I've reflashed my unit several times,
but it remains locked to Vodafone.
If anyone knows how to unlock these things I'd love to know about it.

The trouble with that approach is that you'll not get anything like the
speed that the 3 mobile broadband is capable of.

If you're in an area covered by the T-Mobile 3G network, you will.

I think this is a scam. The links to the terms and conditions and
also to the frequently asked questions do not work. Neither do they
give a postal address to send the modem to and the only geographic
phone number given is a US one.

He probably emails you a link to that thread ;-)

I still think there is something shady about this company. On their
other website, called www.cardunlocking.co.uk , all it says is that
they are located in Glasgow and gives an expensive 0700 number for
calling them. It gives no postal address and will only reveal details
of how to send cards or modems to be unlocked once they have received
a fee of £26 to £39.
Furthermore, when I checked out cardunlocking.co.uk on Nominet, it
says it is a non-trading individual who wishes to keep his/her name
secret. Clearly, it is not a non-trading individual.
I must confess that I like to know who I am dealing with before
sending off substantial monies.

That part is easily fixed.

Well, obviously it's up to you. I can tell you though that I bought a couple
of sim cards from them, with excellent service & absolutely no problems at
all. Also with positive feedback on ebay fast approaching 2,000 I'd be
surprised if they'd jeopardise that for a few £26's ? I know that ebay
accounts are hackable but I just don't think that this has happened in this
case as I'd expect to see more negative feedback by now, as I said though
it's up to you after all it's your money !

The terms and conditions and FAQ are actually contained within the
eBay page itself. The seller seems to have tried to provide links to
jump to the appropriate section of that page but has messed up their
URLs.
If you've been happy with dealing with these people then perhaps I'll
give it a go.
You can get a Network Unlock Code (NUC) for your Hauwei E220 from
Vodafone. You will need to have an account with Vodafone in order for
us to unlock the device, either Pay As You Go (PAYT) or Contract.
If the Data Card is over 12 months old the NUC will be free of charge,
if it is under 12months old there's a charge of £19.99 (Inc VAT.) If
you are a PAYT customer the £19.99 will need to be topped up on your
SIM card which will then be debited once the NUC has been issued.
All you need to do is to call our customer services on 08700 700 191
or 191 from a Vodafone Mobile. We will need to know the IMEI number of
the Data Card which can be found on the white sticker on the device.
If we hold the NUC on our system we can advice you of it straight
away. If we don't hold the information, issuing the NUC code can take
up to 72 hours.

Thanks for all that Samantha.
Actually, if you check back in this thread you will see that I already have
an unlocked (Huawei E620) datacard & I'm not looking to get anything
unlocked myself, nonetheless this information may be useful to others. ;-)
