Default Three X-Series silver: using your phone as a modem

Hi,

Still on the lookout for the best plan with decent data charges in the UK
and roaming charges in Ireland. Three X-Series Silver with Three like home
in combination with a second phone with an O2 PAYG SIM with their £2/month
free Ireland roaming for the areas of Ireland without Three coverage could
be the best solution for me.

Problem is: I'd need to use my phone as a modem for my laptop from time to
time for emails and web browsing (email and web browing on a mobile phone
is cool but when you actually need to get some work done, a laptop with a
proper screen and keyboard is pretty much mandatory). Three X-Series T&C
prevent this but has anybody tried it? Do they actually enforce this
restriction or could I occasionally use my Three phone as a modem as long
as I don't start downloading giga bytes of data?

Thanks.

My understanding is that all of the Three services that fall under X-Series
are by proxy. You can't, for example, install your own internet app on your
phone and use it for free, unless it's able to route through the available
proxies.

Or something.

Oh no, are you telling me that I won't be able to use applications such as
the Gmail java midlet or the ShoZu blogging application because they are
not specifically included in X-Series?

Or is this proxy transparent to the applications and routes all the usual
protocol on the usual ports (HTTP, HTTPS, POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP at least)
automatically?

I think I'm gonna go mad here trying to understand those silly data plans
and all their stupid restrictions, limited unlimited allowances and mad
pricing.

You can install any app you like and any data usage is included (I have
downloaded Fring and that data use is included), however modem use is not.
Not sure how they tell, but I presume they can.

"Liar, liar, pants on fire!"

Sorry just came back from being on holiday since last thursday and feel as
if I haven't had a day off.

I've got X-Series Silver on Three and I use any and every app possible on my
Nokia N73. Anything which uses the 3 connection goes towards data use and
I've had this verified my 3 Cs (also recorded call, just in case).

I use loads of non 3 branded apps on my phone like Nokia podcasting,
OperaMini, OperaMobile, Fring, EQO Mobile, Google Mail, iSkoot, Migg33,
Bluepulse, Symmy, MobileNews, TomTom, LiveTV, InternetRadio, SkybyMobile,
etc.. and have never been charged extra for the usage.

As for using the mobile as a modem, I've used it a few times to test it out
and have never been charge anything extra yet for it. Connect you mobile via
the Nokia Software and setup the modem using manual setting, put in access
point as three.co.uk and leave everything else blank.

A bit cheeky of me but I was on holiday last week and used the phone as a
modem quite alot. Used probably about 300MB. I think some ports are blocked
though.
