Default Three XSeries on the Nokia 6680

Hey Everyone,

Question for you boffins out there. Does anyone know if the XSeries
package from THREE (which includes Skype, MSN, web browsing etc) will
work on a Nokia 6680?

All I can tell for now is that the Nokia 6680 runs Symbian OS v8.0
(Series 60 2.6) whereas the standard reccomended phone by THREE is the
Nokia N73 which runs Symbian OS Series 60 v9.1.

Since they're both running Series 60 then I'd guess it should work
fine. If not then I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade
the Symbian OS on my 6680 perhaps?

Any advice/reccomendations would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Seth.

I do not think 3 will give you the required extra on your account, you
will end up paying for all your data per Mb.

There is "binary break" between edition 2 (6680) and edition 3 (n73)
s60 so no programs from one will work on the other. I think you need
to buy an xseries phone to get it to work.

From what I can see X-Series is a tariff add-on to particular phones. I
cant see why they would not allow the tariff on other compatible
phones, but in their wisdom they have decided not to. I have the
X-Series N73 and there is no branding of X-Series on it, except for the
box it came in and te applications pre-loaded. Existing N73 users can
download the packages and subsceibe to X-Series.

Well other than the obvious reason that they want to use it as a carrot
to sell the "supported" phones, I wonder if there's something about
those which means they can either detect and/or block modem use.

Steve.

1. You won't get the "unlimited" data package that comes with the
X-series (and do 3 still have a walled garden?)
2. ISTR Skype for Series 60 is/was exclusive to Three and the X-series
- it'll probably be available more widely at some point soonish,
however.
3. Yep, these apps won't run on Series60 v2 anyway. Orb probably will -
it'll run on most phones that can do streaming video, and doesn't need
any software, just a web browser/onboard video player - but I expect
Skype won't be released for older phones. I suspect the newer phones
have the higher CPU power necessary for Skype's compression algorithms.
4. I've had bad experiences with Skype over 3G and underpowered
cellphones; don't expect it'll be usable without trying it first!

If you explain to the Cust Serv agent that you will also be using your
SIM card in your second phone (an N73) they will add the X-Series
add-on to your account. You won't get the additional software
downloads, but you will get the unlimited data aspect of the add-on.

The 3 implementation means that you have a standard voice-call at your
end of the Skype call -- and from the other 'end' of that call you hit
3's Skype servers and go into the Skype world of voice transmission.
This means that you can have a Skype call perfectly well while you are
in either 3G or 2.5G coverage.

I've done a little test for you.

Had Skype application running in a 3G area and moved to a 2.5G area (Kitchen
area in my office), an error message popped up "Currently unable to
connect!", but I just selected Options>Refresh now and it just connected
back into Skype on 2.5G connection. Same thing happenned when coming out of
the kitchen with my coffee and back into the 3G area (My desk in the
office).

I was still able to make Sype calls in both 2.5G/3G areas as long as I
refreshed to re-connect to the network.

So to answer you question, YES Skype will work in a 2.5G area.

Thanks for the reply! i have went ahead and got the x series. its class!
very happy with 3!

the reason i asked is because i was chattin to the sales advisor
(http://threestore.three.co.uk/priceplan.aspx) and they said u need 3G
for all x series features. i then posted this and went into the shop
and they obviously knew their stuff and corrected the idiot on the
online chat.

as far as i can see u only need 3g for sling and orb? correct me if im
wrong!

thanks Gerry
