Default time flashes up too quick to read

Have a nokia 2610, when I press the top centre button (to open the phone) i
get the time flash up momentarily. This is the same time format as the
screen saver in a previous nokia 3120. i cannot get this time to stay up
though and it flashes up so quick i cannot read it.

Is there something wrong with this phone?. I tried ringing Nokia a while
ago and it was hopeless to get through. Am i best going back to an orange
shop, since they always seem so busy to deal with such a small problem?

Any Nokia Service Centres near you? I think some of the Carphone
Whorehouse branches are NSC's.
