I'm with Orange (OVP Virgin) and during a recent trip to Europe I
discovered that I was unable to send texts from any of the countries
that I visited (Germany, Austria, Slovakia). I tried all available
networks including a Czech one when I was close to the border, to no
avail, every time I got a failure message. BTW I had no problems making
and receiving calls and also sending texts while in the UK (connected to
the Orange network) works fine.
Before I take a day off work to spend a couple of hours trying to get
through to Orange CS, does anyone have a clue whether my OVP sim could
be faulty (about 7 years old), or whether it's the phone (a Nokia 6310i)
that is playing up?

Two thoughts,
What Message centre number are you using?
Are you international enabled?

Cheers for that.
Yes I am international enabled but I think the message centre number is
the culprit, it didn't have the +44 prefix. Hopefully next time I'm
abroad it will work.
No idea how this number got changed, I was in Ukraine the year before
and no problems with text messaging at all. Would a recent SIM update
have reset the message centre number to its UK default?

The number supplied by Orange will already be in International
format.
If it has been changed then it would be worth checking any programs
you link to your phone as they can over-ride the Orange default
settings.

Check the message centre number is +447973100973 and not 07973100973 or
just 973

The default is +447973100973. AT some point you or someone else has
changed it.
