Unlocked Broadband Dongles
I am looking for an unlocked PAYG broadband dongle which I can use on
any network. When I approached "3" about this, I was told I could not
buy a SIM separately to use with my own dongle. Just as you can buy
SIM-free phones, surely you can buy SIM-free dongles but how do I set
about getting SIMs for them?

I think they've probably got confused because the software that comes with
the dongle will be specific to each operator. But if you just use them with
the usual dialup networking interface (forget any fancy connection frontend)
it should be OK.
They should work with a normal Three SIM - obtainable from eBay or Three.
What I don't know is if there's something special about the SIMs used for
HSDPA, or whether any USIM would do. A USIM will at the very least work up
kulankendi.com will unlock quite a few types of dongle for a fee. The
current bargain offer for dongles is 25 quid for a Vodafone dongle in
Woolworths, if they have any stock left. Total price for an unlocked dongle
would be about 40 quid.
